Metro Boomin is truly one of the greatest producers of our time. I’d argue that he’s the first superstar producer that we have ever experienced. ILoveMakonnen’s “Tuesday” and Future’s “Karate Chop” is what hearing Metro Boomin’s production for the first time for me was like.

His sound has been very consistent and not to mention, he has one of the most well-known beat tags.

If Young Metro don’t trust you…

I’d say, a good chunk of his catalog is basically what any good DJ would play at a party. Everyone knows it’s “Mask Off” and “Bad and Boujee” that get the people going. Playing songs like that and a bunch of other hits is what he’s been doing at festivals and concerts as of late. I caught his set at Coachella, where he brought out some friends like Post Malone, and more recently at Amazon Music Live.

This round, I got to see his stage set up more closely and it’s really intentional. Through the vision of Charm LaDonna, the moody tone of Metro’s superhero production style was set by shadowy figures stomping about in fog to the switch of every song. “Bad and Boujee” included, which had Offset emerging from the fog to perform his part live. Offset also did a few songs off Set It Off, since it was released that same evening.

Recently, Metro did a whole show with a symphonic orchestra, and as you can see from the video below of the concert, “Super Hero” is sounding amazing. I played instruments growing up so I have an appreciation for this sort of thing. I always felt like producers were just like a conductor and that’s exactly what Metro was doing.

What really makes a super good producer, to me, is the ability to put together an entire experience for the listener from the sound to the storyline. For Heroes & Villains, he created an entire universe complete with a comic book and Spider-Man deals. It’s brilliant.

I feel like most things Metro is a part of, it comes with a lot of fanfare. The release of Purple Reign with Future, “Heartless” with The Weeknd, and Savage Mode 2 are the first things that come to mind. He has thee formula.

Lately, he’s been hinting that a project with Future is on the way. I sure do hope so!
