my top 8 songs of 2024

8

charli xcx, everything is romantic (remix)

Charli XCX’s brat album had me in an indefinite chokehold this year. It absolutely got me through my 2024 spring and fall semesters at the University of Houston and the remix to “Everything is romantic” certainly kicked things into overdrive. I got a 4.0 this fall. TYSM CHARLI.

doechii, nissan altima

I once said Doechii raps like a magician and “Nissan Altima” is proof! There is so much precision in the way she delivers every bar. The way she is in sync with the beat while energizing me in the process, Harry Potter would be gagged.

6

cuzzos, pop out

One day, Hit-boy showed me mad videos from this girl group called the Cuzzos and “Pop Out” was a stand out for me. The song and video were both on repeat and so was their EP. To me, the Cuzzos’ future is looking real big sh*t popping, lil sh*t stopping like.

rae khalil, is it worth it

At the beginning of the year I could not get enough of Rae Khalil’s “Is It Worth It.” It’s one of those songs that sounds familiar and my heart just won’t let this one go.

4

summer walker, heart of a woman

Summer Walker never disappoints and that is why she is the heavy weight champ of R&B right now. “Heart of a Woman” is so authentic I am patiently waiting for what Summer has in store for us with Finally, Over It.

3

sahbabii, viking

The first time I heard SahBabii’s album Saaaheem, I was playing zombies on Black Ops 6. The moment I heard “Viking,” I just played it back and went 50 rounds.

2

sexyy red, get it sexyy

There’s not a day that went by where I wasn’t singing “Boy you know this ass super fat! I AIN’T LYING THOOOOO!” The way she has been so consistent with good song after good song is truly inspiring. Sexyy Red’s “Get it Sexyy” really gets me hype and deserves all the praise.

1

kendrick lamar + sza, luther

So far, I have played “luther” back-to-back at least 1000 times since its release. I appreciate the way Kendrick Lamar’s smooth melodic cadence melts in with SZA’s creamy vocals. All I can say is, I really love this song. While I was recently watching the greatest movie of all time, The Wood, during the scene that features the sampled Luther track, “If This World Was Mine,” my brain started singing Kenny’s version. It is a certified generational classic. Period.
